Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament

Posted on April 18, 2012 by Carrie

The kids and I are on our third trip through the Bible, and I am learning how to see Jesus in all of Scripture. The Bible is all about Jesus. And He’s not just in the New Testament, He’s everywhere in the Word.

I always tend to think of the New Testament as the part of the Bible that focuses on Christ, but when you start to really look, you discover Christ from Genesis to Revelation. So if you are in the Old Testament right now, be on the look-out for Jesus.

My husband sent me this great Tim Keller video that will expand your mind regarding the pictures of Christ in the Old Testament. Jesus is not only in the OT, He is the fulfillment of it!

"Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden and whose obedience is imputed to us.

Jesus is the true and better Abel who, though innocently slain, has blood now that cries out, not for our condemnation, but for acquittal.

Meet Carrie, An Everyday Mama

Hi, I’m Carrie. And, I’m an everyday wife and mom.

Although I’ve been a longtime follower of Jesus and an active church member, I always struggled with reading the Bible daily. I would start fresh, only to fail again. But through God’s loving providence, I went from an inconsistent devotional life to a regular time of reading and meditating on Scripture.

How? Well, it wasn’t me! God used my children. In the company of these lively, happy little people, God took a discipline that had been a struggle for me and made it an immeasurable joy. Now, it’s crazy . . . but I’m nearly halfway through my third journey reading the Bible to out-loud to myself and my kids!

I am an Okie (that means I’m from Oklahoma . . . you know, where the wind comes whipping . . . ) but now live in Michigan with my husband, Wes; our four kids; two cats; and Lab named Jeffrey. Wes heads up the media efforts for Revive Our Hearts.

Really, I am just an “ordinary” mom with a heart for my husband, my children, and my extraordinary God. I am seeing that through His Word, God is together growing our appetites for Him.

READ AN EXCERPT

We Read the Bible

And It Comes to Life

If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear. Mark 4:23

On the day I started out to read the entire Bible with
my three children, I was euphoric. This was going
to be great. I sat down at breakfast and read, “In the beginning
God created . . .” Somehow, naively, I expected
my children, the oldest of them only four years old, to
share my enthusiasm. I expected them to be filled with
wonder. I expected them to be wowed by the reading of
God’s Word. I expected them . . . to listen. What was I
thinking?
My first three mornings went something like this.
“‘Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and
all their hosts.’”
“Can I have some more toast?”

Growing Your Child’s Appetite for Scripture

logo3One of the best things a parent can do is instill a love for God’s Word in their children. But what if you have a difficult time reading the Bible yourself? On the next Building Relationships with Dr. Gary Chapman, Everyday Mama Carrie Ward talks about growing appetites for God “Together.” How do you structure a read-through of the Bible?
